Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare to undertake localised repair and sealing of existing pipeline systems
   • Access, interpret and apply repair and sealing of existing pipeline systems documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Identify, obtain and implement signage requirements from the project traffic management plan
   • Identify and select plant, tools and equipment, check for serviceability and rectify or report any faults
2. Perform site survey
   • Notify and obtain approval from property owners and occupiers for entry onto their property
   • Determine site conditions by visual inspection, plans, discussion with land owners and information from service utilities
   • Locate underground utilities
   • Maintain system serviceability during rehabilitation works
   • Survey and record existing site conditions
3. Initiate rehabilitation works
   • Prepare entry and exit pits where specified
   • Identify, interpret and apply confined space entry procedures
   • Monitor installation process and finished product to ensure conformity to the design requirements
4. Undertake localised repair and sealing
   • Determine fault with the aid of plans, drawings, CCTV recording or other mechanisms
   • Select repair or sealing method appropriate to the fault
   • Apply pressure cleaning to the designated location
   • Install repair or sealing material
   • Conduct curing process
   • Correct secure and seal termination at ends of process
   • Open junctions for inspection and operation
   • Monitor installation process and finished product to ensure conformity to the design requirements
5. Clean up
   • Clear work area and dispose of, reuse or recycle materials
   • Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient repairing and sealing of existing pipeline systems including:

selecting and using the required tools and equipment

determining site conditions and locating underground utilities

preparing exit and entry pits

undertaking confined space entry

identifying and selecting repair or sealing methods

monitoring installation process and the finished product

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the localised repair and sealing of existing pipeline systems that meets all of the required outcomes including:

using a range of communication techniques and equipment to convey information to others

maintaining written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

organising work activities to meet all task requirements

demonstrates completion of localised repair and sealing of existing pipeline systems that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

completing a minimum of two (2) localised repair and sealings for existing pipeline systems

identify, obtain, confirm and apply work, safety and signage instructions and requirements

cleaning, checking, maintaining and storing plant, tools and equipment

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in undertaking localised repair and sealing of existing pipeline systems through:

laser control equipment techniques

manual handling techniques

engineering drawings, plans and specifications

equipment types, characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations

site isolation and traffic control responsibilities

safety data sheets and materials handling methods

localised repair and sealing methods

pipeline systems

using civil construction terminology
